It's okay to judge this beauty trend in the best way possible
With each passing season, beauty trends simultaneously become more outrageous and minimalistic at the same time. Balance. In a previous post, you learned that skinimalism, a three-year-old beauty trend, is still trending for 2022. That sort of reminds us of another unmentionable that is still trending for 2022.
Skinimalism dictates that you scale back your 12-step skincare routine to something more impactful for your skin and the environment, too. If you have acne-prone skin, invest in skincare products designed to treat acne. Otherwise, you are wasting money in this hyperinflated economic environment.
Today, we want to talk about another popular beauty trend that will no doubt trend in 2022 - glass skin. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian-West, Beyoncé, and just about every K-Beauty influencer that you love boast glass skin. Healthline describes glass skin as “skin at its very healthiest.” Glass skin is, well, glassy. Think about a freshly cleaned mirror or wine glass. It’s shiny, smooth, and streak-free, or at least it should be. When your skin is glassy, it’s poreless, firm, supple, and luminous. In other words, it is about as close to perfect as any skin type can get.
How to get glass skin naturally
To be clear, *pun intended* glass skin does not happen overnight. Like anything else with your skin, it takes investment - consistency, precision, and time - for you to get glass skin. The popular 12-step K-Beauty skincare routine was designed with glass skin in mind. But remember, we’re skinimalists now, so the 12-step skincare routine is not very practical.
1. You are what you eat
Trash in; trash out. The best way to care for your skin is to be mindful of what you eat. A diet that is rich in processed foods, sugar, and other pore-clogging ingredients does not yield glass skin. Instead, it results in skin that is dull, rough, uneven, and in many cases covered in acne and blemishes. Hashtag eat your colors! Fruits and vegetables add natural colors compared to toxic dyes found in food coloring used in processed foods.
Start by adding leafy greens such as spinach and kale, then try citrusy fruits such as oranges and grapefruits. These plant-based foods contain all of the nutrients that we extract for our skincare products, including vitamins A, C, and E. Also, adding a daily multivitamin supplement can help. To be completely biased, The Good Stuff is a GMO-free, vegan ayurvedic supplement that has all the good stuff that your skin and body loves.
2. Drink water daily
There are many myths attached to water and skincare. Clear skin is one of them. Drinking water daily helps with hydrating and lubricating the tissues found in your skin. The more hydrated and lubricated they are, the better they perform. When you drink the right amount of water daily, you don’t have to worry about your sebaceous glands overproducing oil, for example. And if your oil glands don’t overproduce, you won’t have to worry about acne breakouts and consequent blemishes.
When drinking water, a general rule of thumb is to drink half your weight, in ounces, daily. If you have a more active or athletic lifestyle, then we recommend that you drink 100% of your body’s weight, in ounces, daily.
3. Exfoliate your skin
Just because it takes 28-30 days for you to grow new skin, it does not mean that you should rely on that process. The fact is that free radicals do not want you to have glass skin! That’s why they attack and destroy your skin cells. Destroyed skin cells become damaged or dead skin cells that linger on the outermost surface of your skin. That dry, rough texture that you feel when you rub your fingertips over your skin is likely a build-up of dead skin cells. It’s also a sign of dehydrated skin, but since you already drink more water daily, that no longer applies to you!
Using a daily-use foaming face cleanser such as The Bright Side can go a long way in the fight against free radicals. Otherwise, the average skin exfoliant is best used 2-3 times a week, or as instructed on the product label.
4. Keep it gentle
Though there are specific uses for medical-grade skincare products, we still believe that plant-based, gentle skincare is the way to go. Especially if you do not have more serious skin conditions that you need to treat. Excessive harsh ingredients can wear away the outermost layer of your skin, which makes room for more permanent skin issues including scarring and sagging skin. Again, if you follow a skinimalist routine, you won’t need to use medical-grade skincare products unless you have a medical skin issue that you need to treat.
Remember, glass skin isn’t perfect skin, but it’s damn close to it! The best skincare routine takes at least a month to see desired results. So, take your time, set it, and forget it!
