Slow down aging and restore your skin's youthful glow with these easy lifestyle changes
If you consume beauty content on Instagram, a routine scroll looks something like this: the perfect cut crease, full bushy eyebrows slicked down with eyebrow glue, dewy skin a la Jackie Aina, and way too much makeup from an otherwise beautiful girl with less than 10K followers. It’s the range for me. Our obsession with having the perfect makeup look continues as beauty trends become grander and more theatrical.
Yet, with summer around the corner, the thought of attempting any of that makes my skin breakout! I love a good beat, but I am already prepping my makeup bag with summer-friendly products, including this Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream that Melissa Holdbrook-Akposoe recommended as a suitable replacement for foundation. I want to give sunkissed realness all summer ‘22, and I spent Q1 working hard to ensure my skin is ready for that.
The older I get, the less concerned I am about glam, and the keener I am of taking care of my skin beneath all that gook! Remember when I said here that too much inflammation is a bad thing? Well, the same applies to makeup. Overwearing makeup without a proper skincare routine can result in various issues depending on your skin type. You may struggle with breakouts, roughened skin texture, uneven skin tone, and premature aging. If you have those skin issues going into summer, you may not achieve that coveted sunkissed look that harkens to days well spent and youth.
Speaking of youth, it's no beauty secret that a youthful glow gets harder to maintain the older you get. So, if you want to learn how you can slow the aging process and appear as if you are aging backward, continue reading!
You cannot stop aging
While some procedures and products can reduce the visible signs of aging, i.e., fine lines, sagging, and wrinkles, you cannot stop your body from aging. Fortunately, aging is a sign of a life lived and that you are still here to tell the tale. It happens to us every day from the moment we are born until the day we die. If you stress about aging, you will wear it on your face, hair - everywhere. Embrace it, then incorporate a lifestyle and skincare routine that promotes a youthful glow.
Three ways to restore your skin’s youthful glow
1. Drink more water
There is a myth that drinking water clears your skin. People who suffer from acne will tell you that this is untrue. The main reason you should drink the recommended amount of water daily is to avoid dehydration. Failing to drink enough water can lead to chronic dehydration. That may cause urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, and kidney failure. The stress caused by having any of these health issues will age anyone!
Drinking water keeps your skin hydrated and lubricated. When your skin is hydrated and lubricated, it is less prone to breakouts, dryness, and other superficial skin issues caused by dehydration. Water also improves blood circulation, flushes bacteria from your bladder, and increases bowel movements. Remember, you are what you eat, so your body needs to rid itself of toxins. If you are not using the bathroom enough, your body will push those impurities to the surface of your skin, resulting in breakouts and other unsexy skin issues. Keep your gut clean, and healthy glowing skin will follow.
2. Sleep more
The most important part of your daily skincare routine is adequate sleep! How much sleep you should get each night depends on your age. However, the average adult should sleep anywhere from 7-8 hours per night. Sleep is when your body gets the chance to restore itself. That restoration applies to your skin, too. Your nighttime skin care products get an ample opportunity to penetrate the deepest layers of your skin as you sleep. That is why many potent skincare products are for nighttime use only. Knowing that, wouldn’t you want to give those products as much time as possible to do their magic?
Remember, hydrated and lubricated skin glows with a youthful appeal. Add Sleep(In) Beauty Vitamin C Night Crème to your nighttime skincare routine to awaken your youth! This antioxidant-rich night cream has 5% vitamin C and eightfold oils that exfoliate, hydrate, protect, and refresh your skin.
3. Scale back on the number of products that you use
At the start of this post, I discussed scaling back on my makeup routine for the summer. The same thing applies to skincare. For a few years now, skinimalism has been the quintessential approach to skincare. This beauty trend dictates that less is more, encouraging proponents to use what they need. Think about it like this, most men use the same all-in-one body wash, shampoo, and conditioner to cleanse their skin. They also use body lotion as a moisturizer, if any at all, and many of them have perfect skin! Perhaps there is a science behind it, or they are living proof that less is more.
My current skincare routine consists of a cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and sunscreen. I am makeup-free most of the time, so I cleanse with water or toner only to start my days. Apart from hormonal breakouts during my period, my skin is acne-free, my pores are tiny, and my skin is smooth. Yes, a part of this is due to genetics. However, when I used a million products day to night, I experienced more skin issues than what is normal for me. So, scaling back worked, and of course, my skin appears as youthful as ever.
No matter your age, the appearance of aging starts from within. They say that happiest girls are the prettiest. I’d like to add that happiest girls also look the youngest! Furrow your brows less, smile, smirk, or smize more, and embrace your beauty for what it is - unique and all yours. That will keep you looking young forever!
