Eat your way to good skin health this spring

Is it us, or is Springtime simply the countdown to Summer? Like most people, we are eager for the first normal Summer that we have had in two years! Before we get there, we encourage you to Spring clean their skincare routines and diets, too.

Yet, if inflation is kicking your ass, you probably prefer to spend your money on essentials. You know, like food and gas. If you fall under this category, let’s talk about your Spring-ready diet. Although Summer bodies are made in the winter, if you start now, there is still time to tighten up before the sun, and your buns, are out! And it could be as simple as adding these:

5 powerful skin-healthy foods

Avocados

Before avocado toast put millennials into a proverbial chokehold, most of us did not eat them. Let’s be real. This superfood originated in the Americas and is the fruit of the avocado tree. If you pictured superfood as avocado with a cape on, that’s not what we meant, but if the cape fits, oh well! Avocado is nutrient-dense, filled with everything that your body and skin need. So, this is good news for those of us who can’t afford a skin haul this season.

According to Cedars Sinai, avocado is an excellent source of:

  • Healthy fats - monounsaturated and polyunsaturated

  • Fiber

  • Niacin - the root nutrient of niacinamide, a powerful skin brightening ingredient

  • Vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid - an anti-inflammatory that hydrates, repairs, and soothes damaged skin

  • Vitamin C - an antioxidant that fights the visible signs of aging and brightens your skin

  • Vitamin E - a natural sunscreen agent that is also an anti-inflammatory

As you may know already, there are many ways to eat avocados. I eat them raw with salt and pepper added for taste. You can have them as a part of your morning smoothie.

Avocado and banana smoothies are my go-to morning spritzers for a long day. The recipe is simple:

  • One (1) avocado

  • One (1) banana

  • 1 - 1.5 cups of unsweetened almond milk

  • One (1) teaspoon of 100% organic honey (optional)

  • 5-7 cubes of ice

Put all of these ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Since adding this smoothie to my diet, I feel more energetic, my bloating has decreased, I use the bathroom more frequently, and my skin has a new glow!

Sea Moss

Here at Ailani, we use natural ingredients that heal the body and promote good skin health. At the start of the pandemic, sea moss gained a lot more attention as a natural ingredient that could increase your body’s defenses against the coronavirus. Of course, this did not come without controversy.

Recently, I decided to give sea moss gel a try after visiting a local trade fair. The lady selling it boasted how it helped her husband overcome his scoliosis and lose weight. They both looked pretty youthful and healthy for their ages, so I thought it wouldn’t hurt to try something new. It’s been almost six weeks now, and I feel great, although who knows if it’s because of the avocado and banana smoothies?

Sea moss can be taken in tablet format or as an odorless, tasteless gel added to a smoothie, tea, or coffee. Because pure sea moss comes from the sea, it may contain traces of mercury. That should not be alarming; this is the case with most kinds of seafood. Although proponents of sea moss say that you should have 1-2 tablespoons a day, I am still easing my way into it with one teaspoon every other day. Maybe you should do the same.

This alga is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant-rich, and antimicrobial. A trifecta. It contains:

  • Sulfur - a powerful antibacterial that fights and prevents acne

  • Polysaccharides - a deeply hydrating ingredient that seals moisture in the skin

  • Vitamin A - the most active ingredient found in retinol products, this vitamin prevents breakouts and speeds up collagen production

Raspberries

Our list of powerful skin foods would be incomplete without raspberries. At the core of most of our plant-based skincare products, you will find a berry or two. Most berries are antioxidants that protect your skin against free radicals and reverse the signs of aging. Raspberries contain a healthy dose of vitamin C, another core ingredient in our products.

Apart from its skin brightening properties, vitamin C increases collagen production. As you age, this protein wears away naturally, causing your skin to become dull, inelastic, and rough. By eating raspberries or using skincare products that contain concentrated amounts of vitamin C, you can slow down that process.

Spinach

Here’s a dark leafy green that we love. Since you are working on your summer body, we know that you may be eating more salads than usual, and we love that for you! Spinach is rich in vitamins A, C, and K. You already know why vitamins A and C are essential for your skincare routine, but what about vitamin K?

This powerful nutrient is the healing nutrient of all nutrients. It is often used in medicine to aid your skin during recovery post-surgery or cosmetic procedures such as laser resurfacing. Vitamin K speeds up the healing of bruises, cuts, and wounds. It also eliminates under-eye dark circles and other skin discolorations. Yup, it’s that powerful.

If you don’t care about the benefits of vitamin K, at least consider adding spinach to your salad mix for these reasons:

  • Brighten your skin tone

  • Heal your skin from sun damage

  • Protect your skin by adding a natural barrier

Almonds

Do you love snacks? I admit that I have a snacking problem. Help. On some days, I eat whatever comes to my hands, even if it is a grab bag of Cheetos Flaming Hot Jumbo Puffs. But on most days, I snack on raw almonds.

These nutrient-rich nuts are so good, they have a website, almonds.com. Crazy. According to the site, almonds are antioxidants. They are rich in copper, linoleic acid, niacin, and vitamin E. Copper increases collagen production, which promotes skin that is more elastic, firm, and supple. It also increases your skin’s ability to retain moisture. Linoleic acid is a fatty acid that prevents your skin from becoming dry.

Almonds.com states that a one-ounce serving of almonds has 3.5 grams of linoleic acid. Alas, a new meaning to almond joy.

Remember, good skin and health start from within. You are what you eat - physically, mentally, and spiritually. So beware of what you put into your body, or it will tell the tale! What are some other skin-healthy foods that you love to eat? We’d love to learn more about them in the comments below.
